Jacob Szekely Masterclasses
Jacob is committed to music education and has designed the award-winning curriculum for String Project Los Angeles, The Improvisors Guide to the Cello Academy and given hundreds of workshops across the U.S. for all ages of music students. Jacob is also the creator of The Pickup Test, the global resource for amplified string players.
These 45-90 minute Workshops are designed for high school and college string students unless otherwise indicated. All student workshops are designed to be interactive with Jacob performing while leading the participants/musicians.
This introductory course is designed around some of the core principles of Jacob’s unique approach, including: “The Inner Melody,” using visual spatial concepts, and a new approach to understanding scales.
Why You Can’t Improvise on String Instruments (Teachers Seminar)
This special seminar for teachers focuses on the unique stumbling blocks classically trained string players face when approaching improvisation/chord changes/ and time keeping. Jacob helps teachers identify these areas and offers unique solutions from his experience as a performer, writer, curriculum designer, school founder, clinician, and founder of IGC.
Finding Your Sound on Stage: An Introduction to Amplification
Virtually every young string player these days is interested in amplification, and yet it is the one course still not taught in high school or conservatory. In this workshop, Jacob answers the fundamental questions of how to choose the best amplification solution for each student, how to talk to soundmen, the most important pedal to buy, how to approach monitoring and more. Rather than mere demonstration or “Show and Tell,” students will leave this class armed with powerful principles that they can apply immediately.
Singer Songwriter Skills (For teachers and beginners)
This class encapsulates part of the award winning “Fingerboard Harmony” methodology Jacob developed and refined for over a decade at String Project Los Angeles. In one hour string players learn how to read a chord chart and create their own arrangements using pads, ostinatos and more.
As a Performer, Clinician, Founder, and Inventor, Jacob offers an unparalleled wealth of experience in the creative string world.
Strings Magazine has proclaimed that Jacob Szekely “Has emerged as a leader in the creative string community” and Grammy winning cellist and Berklee professor Eugene Friesen has declared him “The first cellist to make the case as a leader in modern jazz!” In 2007, Jacob expanded his role as musical ambassador through the co- founding and artistic directorship of String Project Los Angeles, a music school and resource for the alternative string playing community throughout and the only school in America solely dedicated to creative string playing.
